Diabetes mellitus is categorized into four general types: type 1, type 2, gestational diabetes, and "other specific types". According to the World Health Organization, the international occurrence of diabetes is about 10%, reaching up to 33% of the inhabitants in some areas. In recent years, there has been an increased attention to pro-and prebiotics among the public and in the medical community due to their probable role in improving health especially in prevention and treatment of diabetes. A probiotic is considered typically as a viable microbial dietary supplement that positively affects the host through its impacts in the intestinal tract. Therefore, we aimed to carry out a review article about the proposed roles and healthcare potentials of probiotics in controlling and management of diabetes as well as reaching a comprehensive conclusion in this field.
