Development of an Anti-inflammatory Oral Nutrition Supplement Formula in Critically Ill Patients Admitted to Intensive Care Unit: A Double Blind Randomized Protocol Study

Abstract

Background: Critical illnesses such as sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) can lead to organ dysfunction and high mortality and present significant challenges in in intensive care units (ICUs). Current research highlights the importance of nutritional support in managing inflammation and immune response. This study developed a novel anti-inflammatory formula targeting inflammatory markers in ICU
patients.
Methods: Seventy-four critically ill adult patients were randomly divided into two groups within 24-48 hours of ICU admission. Two treatment interventions were used; while the control group received the standard oral nutritional supplement (ONS) formula as two times gavage meal, and the intervention group received an anti-inflammatory formula with a low inflammatory profile in the same way as control group for 14 days. Data collection were included demographic information and blood samples at baseline, day 7, and day 14.
Results: Nutritional intervention in modulating inflammation and immune response in critically ill patients, particularly those experiencing systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) or sepsis was verified.
Conclusion: This study considering the efficacy of low inflammatory index formulas and their effects on clinical outcomes in critically ill trauma patients.
